So something a bit less study related, but still important to me nonetheless ❤

After a year of rehearsing, practicing and inventing, the theater group to which I proudly admit to being a part of, the Drama queens, is finally out with our play!

It is a darker comedy about America, immigration, maternity and illness, all with a drop of dark humour.

So for everyone in or around Prague please do comme see us! We have put so much effort in and it would mean a lot to all of us!!
If you are too far, please do retweet, it would help us a lot! For culture! For theater! 💜💙💜

For any more info, do message me! ❤

call for change: studyblrs

frankie-studying:

I have had this blog for about a year now, and I’ve come to realise the unattainable perfection of studyblrs. I created this account to motivate and educate myself and I feel as though these ‘perfect study notes’ hold unrealistic expectations. This is why I have decided to post things that are more realistic, educational and have a positive impact on the community. Please reblog this to spread the message: You do not need perfect notes, every stationary item, a macbook, top grades or an aesthetic study space to be a studyblr. All you need to do is do the best you can.

An important message

My exam is tomorrow. Help....

Hey tumblr, long time no see…
My exam is tomorrow. Help.

Okay a small rant because I need to get it of my chest: this is the exam I have been preparing for for the last three months. I am so, so conflicted as to whether I’m prepared or not. It is quite hard to pass it (20% for the most optimistic one) and there are so many stories of people studying like madmen just to fail. And then of course there are the “yeah, it was not exactly easy but if you put a little effort in it…”. Yeah. I generally don’t believe the later.
But! There is a girl from my past school who managed, by studying the two months of summer. (Round of applause to her!)
But bigger “but”! The thing is, my last school was in another fricking language! With quite a different curiculum! I mean, go and re-learn all your chemistry and a whole lot more in another language! I did not know the basics of anorganic chemistry, not to mention the names of compounds and such. And learning that is not really all that easy.
So it kinda makes me think that it really can’t be that hard to pass and that I am just a perfectionist maniac. Not to discredit her work, but there is only so much you can learn on your own during your last year and in two months. But maybe I’m wrong. I’ll see tomorrow I guess 😂

But still, wish me luck ❤

studyy-my-ass:

The fat soluble vitamins spell “deka”, which in czech means “blanket”.

passwithclassandaniceass:

So ‘it’ happened. You got sick, you scheduled too much at once, you had a bad day (or week). We’ve all been there and it sucks. And now you’re behind and you’re feeling overwhelmed. These are just a few tips I have for getting back on track (and hopefully ahead) after falling behind.

If you are behind on homework it’s time to prioritize. You’re at a point where it might be worth it to let the tiny assignments that aren’t worth very much sit on the back burner until you’ve dealt with the important stuff. So what are your priorities?

Do you have work in a class that you’re doing really well in and you feel like you can set it aside and hand it in late, or you can afford to miss the assignment without screwing up your final grade? Great, set it aside and leave that stress for later.

Do you have work in a class you’re terrified of failing? Okay, focus in on that. If you don’t eliminate the chief point of stress first you’re going to find it very hard to focus on anything else.

Do you have exams coming up that you haven’t studied for? This is rough but you need to decide whether sleep or studying is better for you. There’s no wrong choice here; it’s different for everyone. I am a ‘needs sleep’ person but my roommate is a ‘stay up and get shit done’ person. If you know you can’t function without a decent amount of sleep then ixnay the idea of an all night all together.

Now that you’ve figured that out it’s time to focus; what topics are you doing the worst in? Get started on figuring out what it is you don’t know.

Also make sure to write down what you do know and keep looking over that constantly so you don’t lose the knowledge you already have.

Now figure out what methods you actually have time for; if you’re in a crunch you may not have time for flashcards. I find that when it a crunch it’s helpful to essentially begin compiling a cheat sheet.

Write down everything you could possibly need for the exam as though you were going to be able to take it into the exam. Make it clear! Make it easy to glance at! Don’t waist time on making it look pretty!

As you go through creating the sheet make sure that you would know what kind of problem or topic that the concept/formula would go with and how you would use it to solve a problem.

The above means that you aren’t just copying over formulas, dates, quotes, etc.; You are committing the CONTEXT to your memory and if need be to your sheet.

Is the problem reading? Heaven knows that’s been mine this week! First thing first: READ for the NEXT class. Don’t start with what you should’ve read last week; playing catch up is stressful and means that you may do a ton of work and still not be prepared for the next class.

If you come across parts that don’t make sense because you haven’t read the earlier stuff skip back and skim those bits.

Once you’ve read for the next class you can decide what the best option is for continuing.

Either start at the back end of what you’re behind on or work your way backwards.

Is it an essay? Is it more than one? Okie doke. Break those kiddos down into the sections you think you need; intro, para 1, para 2, etc, conclusion.

Alright, now give those sections titles and maybe like a brief summary.

Okay now you’re ready; pick one section from one of your papers to start on. It doesn’t have to be the intro you just need to get started. I like to start with ones that require a bit of research on my part so that I can really get the ball rolling and start collecting articles.

Then you should either set a timer for about thirty minutes and switch off every time the timer goes off, or (my preferred method) write until you finish the section before deciding which one to work on next.

The real key is making sure that you change sections when you find yourself losing steam even if it’s in the middle of a sentence. Sometimes I start a sentence and then forget where I was going with it and it throws off the whole game so by changing sections you allow yourself to refresh and come back with new eyes.

That’s what I’ve got for now, I hope that some of this helps. I also want to remind you that you are not a bad person for getting behind whatever the reason was. Sometimes it happens even when you’re paying attention so try not to worry too much about it! If you find yourself getting overwhelmed and way too stressed out remember to let yourself breath and walk away for a few minutes. I wish you the best of luck and my ask/messenger is always open if you need anything.

i really could’ve used this last semester. i hope someone else finds it useful! ❤️

phoebe-does:

I’mma be real for a second. All the studyspo posts and studyblr reblogs won’t help you unless YOU make the change. Looking to stop procrastinating? Get better grades? Eat healthier? Get fitter?

All that’s stopping you from doing this is you. All you need is discipline. This took me ages of learning the hard way that that’s literally all it is. Discipline. It’s finding the root core of WHY you want to study WHY you want to eat healthier and it needs to be something strong that you can hold on to. Such as being top of your class, going to med school, practicing a good routine for after high school, wanting to feel better by eating better, want a longer life etc. etc.

After you find your motivation, hold on to it. And from there on out you have to fight for it. And practice. With practice it will become easier, I promise. Starting is always the hardest part but don’t give up. Discipline yourself to be who you want and achieve your goals. Don’t let anything stop you.

Part 2nd on the next Tuesday.

I guess I’m pulling a semi-all nighter tonight, though, because of the two re-takes I’ll be having tomorrow. My exams are in 13 days and I feel I have no chance of getting in… but at the same time I’ve put so much work in! Tbh I panick A LOT these days and the sickness is probably a consequence.

Since I can’t follow my own advice : please take care of yourselves!! It may seem like studying is the only thing that matters, but on a purely practical level, sooner or later you body will fail you and you’ll end up even worse.
(And honestly, if you fail, the planet will not stop turning either.

#optomstudies here with some tips for studying when you’re sick!

Tips for Studying at Home

Wear something warm when you study. A hoodie of some sort is best, or just layer on your clothes. Make sure that you wear socks too; if your feet are cold the rest of your body will still feel pretty miserable. Don’t stay in your pajamas though, because firstly it just feels icky being in clothes that you’ve slept in whilst your sick, and secondly it makes it all too easy to slink back into bed.

Listen to your body - there’s a point where you try and study all you want, but nothing gets in! There’s no point slaving away because it will just extend your recovery period and make things worse.

Along that line of thought, take frequent breaks and get enough sleep. Shorter working periods and breaks works well because you can picture concentration as an exponentially decaying graph; when you’re sick it drops off real quick.

Make sure you have good fluid intake. This will help to put off any headaches caused by dehydration. Plus, drinking enough water will help keep your blood pressure at a good level so that you aren’t feeling faint.

Prioritise - you’ve only got a limited amount of time that you can stay productive before your body gives out, so if there’s anything at all you can put off then do so. Also, there are usually a few things that you need to do for others which you can shoot them an email and ask for an extension. Even if you don’t need it, ask for one anyway, and if you finish early then great! It’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver.

If you’re finding it hard to think clearly about what tasks you have to do, I’d suggest you use an Eisenhower urgency/importance grid, and plot in all your tasks. Ignore all the tasks which are “Not Important” until you have some physical/mental/emotional facility to attempt them.

Don’t waste your time doing chores or tidying up your study space so that you can be “optimal”. A lot of people kind of advocate this, but at this point, you’re sick and that will only waste what facility you have. Doing the very minimum you need to meet deadlines means honing in on the work. Nothing else is important.

If possible, limit the amount of time at a computer; firstly, if your body is fighting an infection systemically, I’m sure commensal bacterial levels in all part of your body will be higher than normal. Your eyes will probably be feeling irritated if you’ve got a cold as well (I know mine always are :P) and staring at a computer screen when you aren’t blinking will just make them dry out.

At the very least, remember to use preservative-free eye drops more regularly whilst you’re working on a computer (this is true whether or not you’re sick tbh).

Plus, the blue light from the screen will keep you up even though the rest of your body is telling you to sleep; get f.lux for your computer or twilight for your phone.

Try to avoid blasting your room with brightness. Even though you might feel like it would make you more concentrated, a lot of times, you feel more light-sensitive when you’re sick. So just choose an appropriate light level, nothing too dark as you’ll fall asleep, and nothing too bright as you’ll be distracted.

Tips for Surviving Compulsory Classes

For classes that are compulsory to attend, take naps before and after so that you won’t fall asleep in them. Because optometry has compulsory clinics, tutorials and even lectures, I have to attend even when I’m down with a cold. What I usually do is to go as late as possible and leave as early as possible to maximise time at home sleeping.

If you’re finding it difficult to concentrate in class, then just switch off the critical thinking and focus on copying down anything the lecturer says. It’s more important to not miss anything than absorbing things when you’re sick. Once you’ve recovered, take the time to go through what you’ve written down again since you weren’t able to absorb it at the time.

If you ultimately weren’t able to attend a lecture or miss something during the lecture, ask your friends for notes. Support system :)

When I’m sick, I will just take time off home-studying because I have a low discomfort/pain tolerance so I really can’t concentrate when I’m tired. It’s really unfortunate that you can’t take days off just to get better, but it’s best to avoid these situations in the future by not leaving everything to the last minute if you can!

Don’t stay up late. Best if you can get the full 9 hours of sleep to allow your body to recover from a cold. You need more sleep than usual because it’s fighting an infection, but you’ll still need to wake up early to get to uni if classes are compulsory.

Finally, don’t expect 100% from yourself when you aren’t feeling 100%. It’s unrealistic to expect to get everything done and beat yourself up over it when you don’t. People will understand if you’ve got a raging headache or a really bad cold, so don’t feel afraid of asking for help or an extension or getting them to do things themselves when you’ve got too much on your own plate.

Quick reminder, especially for you younger undergrads: Discipline is a skill, not a character trait. And just like any skill, it can be practiced and improved upon incrementally. Try not to get discouraged if you have a day, or multiple days, where you are less disciplined than you would like or need to be. Don’t quit. Don’t spend the next week binging Netflix because you think it’s a hopeless endeavour. Just get up the next day and try again. Each day you try is more practice, and each day you practice, you’ll get a little bit better, and that continual improvement will pay dividends in the long run.

Keep at it.

Organic...

conmentatia:

Let’s be honest for a hot second. Organic chemistry? It sucks.
It sucks even if you’re “good at chemistry”. It’s got names for things you didn’t even know existed and it’s got arrows that don’t show you where things go, but how they got there and it’s generally very sensible while being exhaustingly confusing at the same time.
Especially if you’re just starting out on your journey of trying to master/pass it.

I’ve been trying to learn this hell of a subject for my final exam, and have often had to turn to the internet for help. So, here’s a little personal repository of OChem resources that I’d like to share with all you poor, unfortunate souls who are taking this class:

Master Organic Chemistry : this website not only has some excellent posts on the material you need to know, but some even better advice on how to actually get to know it. Mechanisms that are explained step by step, basic principles with examples of why they’re important, and a whole set of posts explaining stereochemistry through cat pics. It’s awesome and I highly recommend it!Also, if you can afford it, they offer “Organic chemistry cheat sheets”, which people claim have gotten them to pass this class in record time - and some of those cheat sheets are _free _on their site!

Virtual Textbook of Organic Chemistry : exactly what it says on the tin!
This is my go-to place when I get stuck, or when I just need a quick refresher on a point so that I can better follow what I’m doing in more complex problems.

IUPAC Nomenclature : aka. LIFESAVER. Here, you’ll find not only the rules and regulations on how to name stuff, but terminology without which you just won’t be able to follow what the heck is going on!

ChemSpider : even if you have a pretty good grasp on naming things, there will probably come a time that a compound will stump you. Instead of losing time trying to crack it, you can go here for a solution, and then work your way backwards on naming it yourself.

CP: OChem 1 and OChem2 : these videos have helped me A LOT, they’re a lot quicker in pace than khanacademy, and there’s also plenty of follow-up material to them you can download!

Organic chemistry as a second language: books on Org1 and 2 by David Klein. I would have probably given up a long time ago without these. They’re a must if you’re just beginning your OChem <strike>journey of crying and sleep deprivation</strike> education or don’t even know where to being studying.
<strike>If you can’t afford them, use the gift of your internet connection, khm, khm.</strike>

Practice tests are your new best friend. Even the ones not specific to your class/professor. Google: “site:edu [organic chemistry] exam” and try to, at least, end your study sessions with practice problems.

Quick note: None of these can substitute your course material, but can only help you understand it better.

Good luck and get studying! :)

science-junkie:

Wildlife and Zoo Medicine: Part 1

The four week wildlife module was strategically scheduled mid-year to break up the monotony of dog and cat cases in the teaching hospital. The first two weeks was a jumble of lectures, practicals and field trips. We discussed current conservation challenges such as trophy hunting, heard from vets working on the frontline of black cockatoo and sea turtle research, learnt the basics of marine mammal necropsies and aquatic pathology, listened to an inspiring talk from an exotics and zoo vet (Peter Ricci - the new Bondi Vet), and learnt about the work of vets at a bear rescue organisation called Free the Bears. The talks were really insightful and gave me an appreciation of the huge range of fields vets can be involved in.

studynostalgic:

no matter what is wrong, there’s a pretty good chance that just getting some sleep will fix it (or at least make it not as bad). it’s the biological equivalent of “turn it off and then back on again”

take advantage of your local library. it’s got free water, bathrooms, heating, and (hopefully) air conditioning, and if you’re lucky, it might have free wifi, computers to use, tutoring, and more.

there’s always that one bookstore or coffee shop that you love to spend time at, but can never remember just how good it is when you’re not there. put a note in your phone or on your wall. go there when you’re having a bad day. remind yourself that there are safe places in this world.

there will be people in your life who are there for you when nobody else is. reach out to them. they might not be your best friends, but they are good people, and talking to them will make you happy.

find time to meditate. as little as three minutes a day will make a tremendous difference in your stress and burnout.

make a playlist for songs that mean a lot to you, and keep it at the top of your list for a few months or years. when you need to feel something, scroll back as far as you can. think about the past, and how far you’ve come, and how much further you will go.

fill your life with little things that bring you joy. listen to classical music in the morning. paint your nails sparkly pink. have a cup of herbal tea during a study break. write down the little things you can do for yourself, so when it feels like there’s nothing left to live for, you have proof otherwise.

make art. it doesn’t have to be good, and it doesn’t need to mean anything. doodle something just because it’s pretty. knit a shapeless hat for your best friend. decorate an old pair of jeans with sharpies. mix paint into pretty colors. do something that makes you feel like a child again.

booksandknowledge:

19/100 • 100 days of productivity!

I’m very stressed today, so this will be short! I have a French exam tomorrow and I really need to finish my German homework! :) Wish me luck!
